22nd of May, 2026

At a meeting of Whitworth Town Council on Thursday 21st May, Councillor Louise Burton was elected by Town Council members as Mayor of Whitworth.  The meeting was attended by family and friends of Councillor Burton, and other dignitaries.

Councillor Burton is going to be accompanied by her consorts, Andrew Burton and Liam Duffy. The Mayor and Consorts will attend functions and events within Whitworth and outside of the town’s boundary, and the Mayor will chair Full Council meetings of the Town Council.  Councillor Burton made a speech during the meeting, describing the role as an honour and thanking her family and friends for their support.  The Mayor confirmed that she was very much looking forward to the year ahead and would be raising funds for some wonderful local groups and charities who do so much to make Whitworth the wonderful place it is.  The Mayor offered thanks to her fellow councillors and to Town Council staff members.

During her year in office, Louise's primary focus will be on trying to make Whitworth an even better place to live, by focusing on improving the environment where we live, working with the Police to improve the safety on our streets, working with Lancashire County Council to improve footpaths and roadways and working to improve accessible and inclusive facilities for our children and young people.

Also at the meeting, Councillor Scott Smith was elected as Deputy Mayor; his role will be to deputise for the Mayor before taking on the chains herself in 2027.  The outgoing Mayor, Councillor Janet Whitehead, gave a short speech in which she thanked all in Whitworth for their support during his Mayoral year.
