Cllr Janet Whitehead is elected as the Mayor of Whitworth 2025-2026

At a meeting of Whitworth Town Council on Thursday 15 May, Councillor Janet Whitehead was elected by Town Council members as Mayor of Whitworth. The meeting was attended by family and friends of Councillor Whitehead, and other dignitaries.
Councillor Whitehead is going to be accompanied by her consorts, Derek Whitehead and friend Karin Tweedale. The Mayor and Consorts will attend functions and events within Whitworth and outside of the town’s boundary, and the Mayor will chair Full Council meetings of the Town Council. Councillor Whitehead made a speech during the meeting, describing the role as an honour and thanking her family and friends for their support. The Mayor confirmed that she was very much looking forward to the year ahead and would be raising funds for some wonderful local groups and charities who do so much to make Whitworth the wonderful place it is. The Mayor offered thanks to her fellow councillors and to Town Council staff members.
The Mayor and Consort have several charity events already in the pipeline, starting with ‘Proms in the Park’. It will take place on July 6th at Whitworth Memorial Gardens with both the Whitworth and Healey Brass Senior and Junior Band will be playing. Janet is also hosting an over 50's Halloween party on Sunday 2nd November at the Ashcroft and WhitFest will take place on Saturday 25th April 2026. During her year in office, Janet’s primary focus will be on trying to make Whitworth an even better place to live, by focusing on the improving of the environment where we live, working with the Police to improve the safety on our streets, working with Lancashire County Council to improve footpaths and roadways and working to improve accessible and inclusive facilities for our children and young people.
Also at the meeting, Councillor Louise Burton was elected as Deputy Mayor; her role will be to deputise for the Mayor before taking on the chains herself in 2026. The outgoing Mayor, Councillor Gareth Baron, gave a short speech in which he thanked all in Whitworth for their support during his Mayoral year.
