After the tremendous success of last year's event, Whitworth will once again play host to a national horticultural event when the Alpine Garden Society stage another Alpine Flower Show at the Civic Hall on Saturday 20 March 2010.
This magnificent event, which attracts exhibitors, judges, nurserymen and enthusiasts from across the country, will feature over 130 individual classes ranging from rare alpine gems to bulbs, conifers, ferns and mini-gardens. Unusual plants from around the globe will vie for your attention with nurserymen selling the cream of alpine plants, while many of the nation's leading exhibitors will be competing for a number of highly prestigious trophies.
Shows held in the 1990s and more recently in 2009 attracted marvellous attendances and the organisers hope that Whitworth folk will be tempted back by a huge raffle, superb tombola, free parking, seed, book and plant sales and excellent refreshments.
Please note the date of this hugely attractive show in your diaries (20 March 2010 from 11.30am to 4pm) and enjoy the floral magic of the mountains in the foothills of the Pennines. The Show Secretary, Carol Kellett can be contacted on 01257 273382.
The East Lancashire group (which holds regular monthly meetings at the Civic Hall in Ramsbottom) continues to thrive - new members are always welcomed and encouraged. Chairman Cliff Booker can be contacted on 01706 356385.

On Friday 12 March 2010, Whitworth Sports Council will be holding a Blitz Ball.
It will take place at The Riverside (Civic Hall), Whitworth, with doors opening at 7.30pm and dancing until midnight. The event will feature two of the UK's most highly respected swing acts - The Swing Commanders (pictured here), performing live and billed as 'Britain's best 40s and Western Swing sextet', and GI Jive, who will be spinning the discs of the era. Revellers are encouraged to dress to impress in 1940s and 1950s civilian or military outfits.
Tickets are now on sale costing £15 each, the price of which includes a potato pie supper - because of the quality of the performers and the strength of following they have, tickets are expected to sell quickly for this event and should be booked in advance.
