Whitworth’s first Mayor’s Awards were held in 2017 and were a tremendous success, the event is set to return in 2019 so here is a look back at the last event.
The 2017 Mayor’s Award winners:
Jack Wilkinson Young Achiever Award – Daisi Daniels
Daisi Daniels is a local girl from Whitworth who competes as an alpine ski racer all over the world aged only 14 and spends as much time as possible in Italy to train for the winter season Daisi is currently the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G British Champion and has just represented GB and won 3 medals in Andorra.
Jeff Ogden Services to the Community Award - Brian Furness
Brian took over the chairmanship of Whitworth Historical Society in 2011. His drive, dedication, staunch commitment, and love for the history that surrounds Whitworth has been invested in the museum allowing it to grow, develop and expand. For six years Brian, has been a great contributor to our Whitworth Community not only to the museum, which attracts visitors from all over but also to Hallfold United Reform Church where he is an active congregational member raising funds for Church funds and giving up his time for the Whitworth Community in general.
Volunteer Award - Emma Glendinning
Emma volunteers within the Shawforth community. She has established community cinema evenings at Shawforth Chapel and really helped to establish the building as a hub within the community. Emma also helps as a volunteer to fundraise for St John with St Michael school and she delivers the Whitworth Valley News for Whitworth Sports Council.
Best Business Contribution Award - Anglo Recycling Technology Ltd
Anglo is a very long standing business, probably the only factory in Whitworth that has been in production for over fifty years. They have now branched out into recycling, providing matting to several garden centres, and supply to the motor industry.
Anglo provides work for many people within Whitworth and the owner of the company, Simon Macaulay, has instigated the setting up of a Youth Club by funding a Youth and providing a self-contained unit, free of charge, for use as a weekly drop in centre, extra to the Youth Club, for the young people of Whitworth.
Bringing Communities Together Award - Samba Dance
Samba raises the happiness levels in Whitworth. Sam works so hard and has done for years, Samba currently runs 52 classes every week and helps students to enter competitions too. Additionally, Sam is always eager to volunteer to support local causes, charities and events.
The Pride of Whitworth Award - Dawn and Martin Duffy
Dawn and Martin Duffy run F Duffy and Son Funeral Directors do a lot of work for Whitworth on a voluntary basis, supporting charities and events and generally being an essential part of the local community.
