Whitworth’s New Year’s Day Duck Race has become an egg-citing success and a popular event in the Whitworth calendar. Usually the ducks take to the water at the overflow of Cowm Reservoir on Tong End on new years day but in 2021, due to Coronavirus things will be a bit different with our first ever virtual race.
The Duck Race is organised jointly between Whitworth Town Council’s Tourism and Leisure Committee and CLAW (the Community Leisure Association of Whitworth), and all proceeds are ploughed back into tourism and leisure events for the town organised by the two organisations.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, numbered ducks sponsored for a pound are entered into the Duck Race, with cash prizes for first, second and third place ducks of £100, £75 and £50. Even the last duck wins a tenner!! This year the race will be filmed and streamed online at 1pm on New Years Day so that you can watch along in the comfort of your own home. Results will be announced at the end of the race and the winners will be contacted to arrange distributionof prizes.
As this year, there will be no spectators and you won't be able to sponsor ducks on the day, make sure you are prepared and buy your ducks early!
