Back to the Schoolroom as local group secures lottery funding

Published on 26th May 2021

Whitworth Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society have been awarded a National Lottery Grant for Heritage. The local theatre group moved into St John’s Hall in Facit, Whitworth five years ago and have revived the local tradition of pantomimes alongside a programme of plays and musicals.

One of the project coordinators Emma Bradburn said; “The building has been used for many things over the years- a school, nursery, Sunday school, youth club, sports facility and now once again as a performance venue. We want to research and celebrate the different things that have gone on here and involve more people locally.”
The project will work in partnership with both St John’s Church and Whitworth Historical Society to research any stories, documents, photos or objects that used for series of open days and exhibitions later in the year.

“We also want to interview people who have any memories or stories of the hall.” continued Emma, “Whether you came here as a pupil, a youth club member or a pantomime performer, we want to hear your stories. Similarly, if you have any photos or documents relating to the building then we’d like to scan them and use them in a physical and online exhibition. You can come along to one of our drop in days in July and have a coffee and a chat bring along your memories and photos.”
The project will be hosting the drop in day between 10am-2pm on Sat 3rd July and Sat 10th July. There will be free tea and coffee for participants. Drop ins are welcome but booking on the number below is recommended.

“Back to the Schoolroom” will then host a series of public events for people to attend including Heritage Open weekends in September and a Victorian Christmas celebration. Activities will include an exhibition, short film, theatre performance and refreshments.

The project also coincides with the 150th anniversary of the founding of St John’s Church, which will be celebrating in November.
